When Clever IDM started making the rounds — the idea that we could sync downwards to Active Directory — it just solidified everything. That was the piece we needed to make it all work.

There are two layers of security. First, we go through the information for each application and see what needs to be shared – that information only goes between our SIS and Clever. Then Clever shares with the end application. There are multiple layers and it’s very easy to turn off what they can and can’t share.

“I’ve actually been looking for about three years for a solution for that MFA piece,” said Browning. “We’ve been saying to our SOC, ‘we can’t’—and that wasn’t good enough anymore.”
Clever provided a very cost-effective way to implement MFA for our students’ accounts using QR codes as a form of physical token to authenticate against Windows device and Entra account logins. The ability to manage the QR codes ourselves provided us a flexibility to use the QR codes in the way we wanted.
MFA mattered to us not just as a cyber control, but as a governance and equity issue. We needed a model that: – Met Essential Eight intent – Didn’t push complexity onto families (with the managed device roll out) – Didn’t interrupt teaching and learning Clever’s age‑appropriate, deviceless MFA allowed us to scale security across both cohorts [primary and secondary students] without changing expectations for families or teachers. That flexibility was vital.
We spent three years searching for a solution that could handle student MFA without requiring a phone. Clever is the best system we’ve seen; the way it handles that specific piece is just really good.
With junior school, it [student MFA from Clever] is really good. I think they’re finding it a lot easier to sign in. Also with the Clever Portal, there’s one click and a student can go directly to that website. It’s definitely more seamless for the students.
