Kanawha County Schools serves 23,000 students in West Virginia. The district has a priority to support teachers and students who use both their LMS, Schoology, and the Clever Portal to find their learning tools by making it easier for them to use the two platforms. During Back to School 2024, they rolled out a new math curriculum using Clever LMS Connect to power the LTI connection. LTI connections enable a secure data exchange that allows teachers and students to log in to external learning tools from their preferred learning platform.
What is Clever LMS Connect?
Clever LMS Connect is one place to manage connections between applications and LMSs. Teachers have more time to focus on students with grades and assignments that automatically sync from applications to their LMS. Students and teachers save time when using secure SSO to log in to applications from their LMS or the Clever Portal – whatever tab they’re in! Applications on Clever LMS Connect adhere to the latest 1Edtech LTI 1.3 standard. This standard is also the most secure kind of data exchange between your tech tools.
An IT office flooded with tickets because of inconsistent LTI connections
Kanawha County Schools uses Schoology and the district wanted their teachers and students to be able to find and access their applications in the LMS. In recent surveys, Clever found that over 80% of teachers use an LMS and like in many classrooms, Kanawha’s LMS plays a central role in learning. In the past, the district put time and energy into setting up LTI connections with a dozen applications but ended up dropping all of them because login failures and missing resources within applications were too common and help-desk tickets piled up.
Hands-off LTI connections powered by Clever
As they prepared for Back to School 2024, Kanawha County decided to start using Clever LMS Connect, a new integration that makes LMSs and applications interoperable. With Clever LMS Connect, IT administrators can connect their LMS to Clever once, and set up LTI connections with their applications in a few clicks just like they do with Secure Sync rostering. Without LMS Connect, the district spent a month or longer configuring data and manually sharing it with their applications to get LTI connections off the ground. Even after all the effort, the connections didn’t always function and required more work with the application.
A smooth rollout to over 40 schools in the district within 1 week
Using Clever LMS Connect, Kanawha County Schools implemented a brand new math curriculum to 42 schools in the district. They managed automated rostering and the connection between Schoology and MyAda Math all in one place – Clever. Creating the LTI connection took a week while comparable new rollouts with LTI have taken over a month to complete. The change that comes with new implementations can always be stressful, especially during Back to School, but using Clever LMS Connect, the district avoided the pitfalls they experienced in the past when rolling out new integrations. Because the connection was so easy to set up, the IT team was alleviated from the stress of fixing unprecedented problems during Back to School and had more bandwidth to tackle other projects.
Best of all, the connection is working for teachers and students. The IT office hasn’t received any tickets or reports of issues from their end-users, and that’s over 12,000 teachers and students. With LMS connect powering the connection, all of these users are saving time and accessing their resources easily thanks to secure SSO, and grade and assignment syncs between MyAda Math and Schoology.
The future of LMS and application connections
Clever built Clever LMS Connect because it has such a meaningful impact on the way districts can manage edtech and the way teachers and students can use that edtech in the classroom. We’re continuing to build the integration with more and more applications so districts can have smooth rollouts and bring more ease of use to digital classroom learning like Kanawha County did with MyAda Math. You can let your applications know you would like to use Clever LMS Connect with them by filling out the app interest form in your Clever dashboard.
