RootWords

Learn words Fast! RootWords is a root-words based, tumbler style, vocabulary learning app. Pick a root you (or your students) would like to study, press the spin button; prefixes and suffixes will drop into place to form a word. The word parts are called morphemes (the smallest meaningful part of a word). If the learner doesn’t know the meaning of each morpheme, they can tap that window to see a definition of that part. The whole word will be visible at the top. Tapping the word will present the definition of the word. Beneath the parts the student will be able to see 1. Audio- tap audio and hear the word in American English 2. List- a list of other words sourced from that root 3. Sentence- see a sentence using the word and 4. Test- take a short multiple choice quiz. With rapid and repeated exposure to the morphemes learners will grow vocabulary more quickly and learn how to decode words earlier because they will start to recognize the parts, and they will see how parts fit together to build words. On the top left of the screen is the gaming portion. Learners can play different games to earn points. Currently we do not link leaderboards, we believe that once learners see the logic of words (and have the ah-ha moment) they will be self-motivated to learn more about words.
